5 ways to find out their ring size

Knowing your partner’s ring size can be advantageous when it is time to go ring shopping. As mentioned in our guide to engagement ring shopping, the ring size is one of the most important elements when ring shopping.
There is no one-size-fits-all. With many jewellers, you can only resize a ring by one size after you have made your purchase. This means you must try to narrow down their size before making your purchase, especially when looking to buy an engagement ring online.
How can you determine their ring size? Here are our tips for finding their ring size!
Take a ring they wear often
One of the simplest ways to narrow down your partner’s ring size is to take a ring they wear often. Bring this with you to a jeweller and they can easily size the ring you have.
Try taking a ring they wear on their ring finger or a similar finger. This will help find a more accurate size, as it is essential to remember not all fingers are the same ring size.
Check for sizing stamps inside the ring
If you can’t take a ring they wear often without them noticing, try seeing if the ring has a size stamp. A lot of rings will have a size stamp on them. Usually, you can find the size etched on the inside of the ring or the edge.
Try and find this ring size. It is not always so obvious, so you must look closely. Once you have found the size, write it down and save it to provide to your jeweller when ring shopping.
Request a helper to take them ring shopping
When in doubt, get an assistant to help you on your mission. You can get them to ‘spontaneously’ take them ring shopping by telling a close friend or family member. Extra points if it is someone also potentially getting engaged soon, this will help remove any suspicions.
Not only can this help determine their ring size, but it can also get an insight into their preferred ring style.
Measure their finger with a string or ring sizer as they sleep
Perfect for those whose partner is a heavy sleeper, take advantage of their deep sleep state and find out their ring size while they are snoozing!
If you can pull it off, measuring with a string tied around the finger is a classic measurement method. Otherwise, if you’re prepared and have a print-out ring measure on you, use that while they dream away.
Ask them
If you’re a straight shooter and have openly discussed proposing with your partner, you can directly ask them for their ring size. They may know and may be able to give you their size on the spot.
If they’re unsure of the ring size themself, this may prompt them to try on rings and find out their size for you later. It may also lead to the idea of shopping for a ring together as a couple.
As you can see, there are a few ways to find out your partner’s ring size. If you have determined their size and are ready to take the next step, visit the Ernesto Buono Fine Jewellery website.
