What is the pear shape?
The origins of this diamond shape date back to 1458 when Lodewyk van Berquem experimented with symmetry and the placement of facets. The pear shape is a cross between round brilliants and marquise diamond cuts. With 58 facets, this kind of diamond is almost as brilliant as the round cut but with a more unusual shape. The pear shape is one of only two diamond cuts that are not symmetrical both horizontally and vertically. Despite being one of the more unusual diamond engagement rings, the pear shape is becoming popular amongst modern brides who appreciate its flattering shape and astounding shine. The elongated design of the pear shape makes it one of the most flattering diamond cuts available as it helps to elongate and slim the finger. This makes it a good choice if you have wider fingers along with other slimming cuts such as the emerald, marquise and oval. It is also common for the pear shape to be less costly than other cuts, such as the brilliant, of the same carat weight as they are less in demand and easier to produce. What should I look for in a pear-shaped engagement ring?
To ensure that your pear engagement ring has the best possible appearance, there are a few things that you should look out for. You want to make sure that your diamond is symmetrical and that it has the ideal length to width ratio as this will improve the brilliance. Check that the table is centred and that the bow tie effect doesn’t impact the appearance of your diamond. Higher clarity diamonds are best as the pear shape does show inclusions and flaws quite easily. In terms of your setting, give extra protection to the pointed tip as it is prone to damage. A halo setting, or additional claw should do a suitable job of protecting your gemstone.

Ernesto Buono is an Italian‑trained master jeweller and the founder of Ernesto Buono Fine Jewellery, a bespoke jewellery atelier based in Parramatta, New South Wales.
