  • October Opal

October’s birthstone, the mesmerizing opal, is a stone like no other on the surface of the planet.

Its kaleidoscope play-of-colour and delicate, dreamy glow create opal as a stone of creativity, intuition, and emotional depth. Each opal is distinct—a manifestation of individuality, love, and artistic flair.

Opal has been associated with emotional intensification, creativity, and internal transformation for centuries.

Ancient Romans believed it had the power of all gemstones because of its dramatic display of colors.

In spirituality, opal is believed to activate the third eye and heart chakras, enhancing intuition and encouraging expression from the heart.

Traditionally considered a stone of passion and loyalty, opal is thought to strengthen emotional bonds and encourage truth within relationships.

It’s also thought to fuel creativity, so it’s a great choice for artists, lovers, and dreamers.

For October babies or anyone looking to become more deeply connected to themselves and others, opal offers a sense of emotional clarity and radiant beauty.

Due to its softer nature, opal requires well-designed settings. At Ernesto Buono Fine Jewellery, we recommend wearing opals in pendants, earrings, or occasion-wear rings where they’re more protected from direct impact.

Bezel settings provide a neat, protective border that surrounds the stone without compromising elegance, Claw settings, when executed with precision, allow light to dance across the stone without compromising durability, Opals also shine in vintage-inspired or celestial-motif designs—ideal for creating customised jewellery that’s both ethereal and timeless.

Pairing opal with diamonds or white sapphires can add sparkle and contrast, while yellow or rose gold warms opal’s fire-like play-of-colour.

Australia produces over 90% of the world’s opals, and they are found largely in Lightning Ridge (black opals) and Coober Pedy (white and crystal opals).

Locally produced opals are some of the most prized around the globe, often possessing rich flashes of red, green, blue, and purple on top of a creamy or inky background.

At Ernesto Buono, we handpick each opal for the depth of its color, pattern, and clarity to ensure every piece is as distinctive as the wearer.

Whether a custom engagement ring, push present, or milestone necklace, opals make a poetic, personal statement.

Because of their uniqueness and delicacy, we also offer tips on long-term care and styling to preserve your opal investment over the years.
