Are wedding rings still relevant in 2022?
17 August 2022 • 4 min read

While some choose the classic big white wedding, many modern-day brides prefer to go for an unconventional celebration that challenges the tradition. White dresses are replaced with colourful designs. Churches are swapped for gardens. Last names are left untouched or become a joint hybrid of both parties.
So that begs the question, is one of the most significant wedding traditions, the all-important diamond wedding rings, still relevant? Ultimately, the decision comes down to you and your partner.
If you’re unsure whether to follow or stray away from this tradition, have a read below.
The importance of the wedding ring

While it did once signify ownership status, wedding rings have long since evolved to become a token of the love and devotion shared within a relationship. It symbolises two hearts beating as one and the proud commitment you’ve made in devoting your life together. It also is seen as a sign of respect and an unbreakable bond.
The romantic notion and what it represents is the reason why many people choose to keep the tradition alive. Not to mention, they play important roles in many religious ceremonies.
Is a wedding ring right for you?
When it comes to deciding on wearing wedding rings, the opinion varies. Some people view the rings as a meaningful representation of their holy sacrament. In contrast, others oppose the tradition entirely and believe a piece of jewellery could never represent the love they feel. Others want to go outside of the box and prefer to be more unique from the norm.
So really, it comes down to what you believe as a couple. The good news is that we are no longer in the 17th Century. As we’ve evolved globally, the concept of weddings has changed also. No longer do you have to stick to tradition. Instead, you can choose to get married in a personal way. A celebration that fits you as a couple.
Weddings are an essential milestone that is held to celebrate the love and commitment between a couple. If you believe wedding rings are essential, go for it. And if not? Stray from tradition.
It is important to note that many couples skip the wedding ring exchange entirely. Some find their engagement ring alone signifies their commitment enough and don’t want another band to take away from the design of the initial ring. Others may be unable to afford the luxury of extra rings and are happy expressing their love through other means.
Alternatives to the wedding ring

However, if your partner is wearing a ring or you still want to respect the tradition of representing your marriage, there are different choices. You can even go for an alternative design such a as a dress ring.
A popular trend many have selected is opting for a tattoo on their ring finger instead of a ring. This is ideal for those who cannot wear a ring. The best part is you’ll never forget to leave the house without it!
Another alternative is to wear your ring as a pendant on a necklace. Many like this idea if they cannot wear a ring or don’t like rings in general. Other alternatives also include getting matching necklaces and bracelets.
Not a fan of diamond wedding bands but still want something to represent your important day? An unconventional idea for those who want to lose the ring entirely would be to get a matching tattoo to represent your relationship. This doesn’t have to be on your ring finger; it could be anywhere!
